Public Relations

Megan Connor Murphy

Vice President, Emerging Technologies/Economic Development

Interests: Public affairs, government relations, strategic PR

Why did you choose a career in public relations?
I pursued public relations as a career because it was a natural outgrowth of my previous career in journalism. More specifically, the opportunity to manage PR for a client I was passionate about (Greater Rochester Enterprise) was a key reason for making the leap from journalism to PR.

What are some activities you enjoy participating in outside of work?
I love to travel—I’ve had wanderlust since I was at least 11 years old. I’m always up for going anywhere. And now that the kids are getting a little bigger, we hope to travel much more than we have in recent years. Disney is definitely on our list!

What was one of your most treasured belongings as a child?
My diaries. I have all of my diaries going back to when I was 5.

If you could go backwards or forward in time to experience any event in history, what would you choose to witness?
I’d go back to 1989 when I decided to stay and nurse my beer at the Hof Brau Haus in Munich instead of traveling with friends to Berlin. The Berlin Wall came down the next day and my friends witnessed history. This is a huge regret of mine!

What is your life motto?
I suppose it’s the same as journalism’s motto—comfort the afflicted (in my case, by indirectly helping people get jobs), and afflict the comfortable (again, in my case, by indirectly encouraging companies to pay their people better).
